Lightspeed – Origin Story

Venture capital firms often talk about their investments, portfolios, and successes. But what makes one firm different from another? Lightspeed – Origin StoryLightspeed – Origin Story

The Challenge

Venture capital is built on relationships, ideas, and trust. For founders looking for investment partners, understanding who they're working with can be just as important as understanding what a firm offers.

Lightspeed wanted to strengthen its brand and create content that would distinguish it from competitors. But another corporate video highlighting its accomplishments wasn't going to communicate what made the firm special.

The challenge was finding a way to show Lightspeed's personality while telling the story of how it became the company it is today.

‍

The Story We Found

During the "Consult" phase of our process, we sat down with the Lightspeed team to understand their history, culture, and what made them different. What emerged was a personality that didn't fit the traditional image of a venture capital firm. They embraced their nerdy side, valued unconventional thinking, and weren't afraid to take risks in pursuit of ambitious ideas.

That gave us a much more interesting story to tell. Rather than focusing on investments or financial achievements, we built the film around Lightspeed's origins and the personality that helped shape its journey. From humble beginnings to a global investment firm, the story showed that Lightspeed's identity was about more than capital. It was about the people and ideas behind it.

‍

How We Told It

We developed an animated origin story that combined character-driven storytelling, expressive illustration, and cinematic movement. Rather than relying on narration to explain the firm's history, we let the visuals carry the story, supported entirely by music.

The approach gave us room to introduce personality, and unexpected moments while communicating Lightspeed's growth.

We combined 2D animation with strategically placed 3D sequences, including a sweeping journey through a city that contrasted the firm's modest beginnings with the much larger world around it. Every creative choice was designed to make the company's history feel less like a corporate timeline and more like a story worth watching.

‍

The Deliverables

and how the story was used in a story ecosystem

An original, music-driven film exploring Lightspeed's history, personality, and growth.

A narrative developed through discovery, scripting, storyboarding, and art direction to reflect what made Lightspeed different.

Custom characters, environments, expressive animation, and cinematic sequences that brought the firm's history to life.

‍

The Outcomes

based on trust, not just metrics

The finished film gave Lightspeed a distinctive way to share its history and introduce its personality to founders, partners, and the broader investment community.

Instead of relying on the familiar language of venture capital, the story communicated the firm's character through visual storytelling. The project also established a creative relationship built on collaboration and a willingness to explore unconventional ideas.

Most importantly, it gave Lightspeed a way to show audiences something that couldn't be communicated through a list of investments or accomplishments. Who they are.

‍

Making The Story

Our relationship with Lightspeed began after they saw an animated video we'd created for Rhove. Interested in bringing that same creative thinking to their own brand, they invited us to explore how we might tell their story.

We started by consulting, learning about the firm's beginnings, culture, and ambitions before developing the script and visual direction.

The creative approach combined primarily 2D illustration with moments of 3D animation. One of the biggest technical challenges involved building a city environment that allowed us to move through a large urban landscape before arriving at the small building representing Lightspeed's beginnings.

We also developed expressive character animation to give the people in the story personality without relying on dialogue. The final film brought everything together through visuals and music alone, proving that sometimes the most compelling brand stories don't need to say a word.
